How to change Windows XP Boot and logon screen
To change your Default Boot Screen and logon Screen
First I will tell the simplest way of changing
1.Boot Screen
2.Logon Screen
Download an application called "Tune up utilities 2008". Its not a freeware. You can use it as a 30 day trial copy. After installing select the customize windows option, ther you select change logon screen option.... Rest is quite straight forward you can replace the existing one with the one of your choice.
But be careful the boot screen image should be of resolution 215X147 and it should be of "16 colour .bmp" (not 16 bit) format. But changing boot screen is a bit RISKY. Try it out at your own risk.
A). Changing Boot screen manually :-
1.First download a freeware application called "Resource Hacker". You can get it here http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ or just google it
2.Locate a file called "ntoskrnl.exe" in \Windows\System32. Make two copies of it. One for editing the other for reverting back to original (Just in case something goes wrong) Open Resource Hacker. Load the file that you copied to edit.
3.Now in the left panel of the Resource Hacker, drop down "bitmap" and "5" under it click on 1033. Now you can see your default Windows Boot screen.
4.Now Right click on 1033 and select "Replace Resource". Click on "Open file with new Bitmap", Browse to your new image and select replace and save and exit. NOTE that the image should be of resolution 215X147 and 16 colour .bmp format
5.Boot into windows in safe mode. Replace the original "ntoskrnl.exe" in \Windows\System32 folder with the one you edited.
6.Reboot and see the change.
Changing Boot Screen is Risky
B) To change your Logon Picture manually
1.Same procedure as above stated but the file to be edited is "logonui.exe" found in \Windows\System32 folder.
2.Open this file in Resource Hacker and drop down Bitmap->100 in the left panel. Click on 1033 and replace with any image file you want again it should be of bitmap format.
